What are the key factors that impact upon student motivation in learning music?
The Researching Teaching & Learning 2 unit focused on students creating 4 person groups to investigate a large topic. That topic would then be sub-divided into smaller categories which each group member would then focus on.
The Broader topic was "What are the key factors that impact upon student motivation in learning music?". My sub-topic was "The Balance of Practical and Theory based music lessons on motivating learners". 1.2: A large aspect of this assignment was understanding how motivation plays a key part in teaching students. Motivation has many aspects which include self-regulation and just the simple desire to achieve. Motivating students is the challenge which many teachers face in their professional careers.
5.5: The proposed research focused on using data collection of student achievement to put the original ideas into practice. Student data like attendance and grades can provide a very strong image of overall student achievement. In saying that, there are still aspects that this type of data does not show. In particular, the individual characteristics of those students. Therefore knowing students, is just as, if not more important than knowing what they have achieved in the past.
6.2: Action-Based Research is research done in the field. Sometimes it is more informal, and other times it has a set structure. In theory, all teachers should be constantly researching and critiquing their own practice to improve their students success. Action based research is just one way to improve ones professional teaching capabilities.
7.2: It is a requirement of teachers to incorporate research and knowledge into their teaching practice. This assessment task, and others like it are evidence of this practice.

This type of assessment prepares students for the real-world challenge of constantly managing and improving their own teaching practice. Action-Based research allows teachers to monitor their students progress in real time. The most compelling results often appear at the start and end of a project. However, the small adjustments, changes and challenges along the way are what can make a teacher successful.
