Adolescent Development & Teaching - "Kayla" Lego Animation
This assignment was a collaborative effort between Roxy, Natalie and I. We decided to take a different approach and attempt a lego animation for this assignment. The best thing about this assignment is that it shows the understanding of different teaching theory (specifically Piaget's Levels of Cognitive Development) in a really visual way through lego bricks.
In the assignment, students are given a character profile of a student going through developmental issues. Our case had 'Kayla' - a year 7 student with early maturity, lack of cognitive development and social issues. The assignment kinds strategies as teachers to deal with these issues mostly in the form of support for Kayla. |
"Kayla" Lego animation created in 2016 as part of the Adolescent Development & Teaching unit at Western Sydney University.

3.5: Although this video presentation is not targeted towards students, it does demonstrate various ways of portraying information. In this video, there is aural, visual, written and even an element of kin aesthetic understanding through lego bricks. This displays a wide variety of communication strategies that cater for the diverse needs of students in the classroom.
4.3: A key aspect of understanding students challenging behaviour, is discovering why that behaviour is occurring. This assignment tackles this head-on explaining poor performance in class through key developmental issues. These sorts of issues are the kinds of problems that students will go through, therefore it is important to critically assess these and develop strategies to manage challenging behaviour. Personally, i have found getting to know the student is a really successful way of managing challenging behaviour. Building rapport is critical to dealing with students.
7.1: Part of being an ethical teacher is understanding these issues from a more scientific and personal approach. Students might be misbehaving, but there could be a wealth of issues under the surface that teachers are not initially aware of. That is why a sense of empathy is important in these situations. The kinds of statements used in the Kayla video, demonstrate the types of claims a teacher could make to a parent or principal, in providing additional support for a student.

Upon reflection of this assessment, it is clear how it was beneficial to my overral learning. It was insightful to develop different avenues of portraying information through lego bricks. It details the steps and difficulties that teachers may face in their pursuit to really teach ALL students.
