Universal Design for learning refers to the creation of resources and lessons that cater for diverse student needs from the design-stage of teaching.
Instead of modifying a lesson, you create one that supports all students from the start. This UDL Case study was one of my more successful assignments throughout my Masters of Teaching (Secondary) course. This project is based upon creating a lesson that supports a hypothetical student with Attention-Deficit Disorder. In a classroom, it is likely that as i teacher i will be faced with many challenging students. These challenges could come in the form of behaviour, but they could also come in the form of vast differentiation for students. This assignments targets those key areas of differentiation, and provides strategies to cater for those students. |

1.5: Differentiation does not always mean altering a lesson for that student. It could also mean developing a lesson that caters for that student at the design stage. This lesson reaches this standard, through the systematic overhaul of an existing lesson to comply with UDL's most basic principles.
1.6: Although Attention Deficit Disorder is only one small aspect of the autism spectrum, there are still many other dissabilities and needs that students will have in schools. This assignment addresses just one child's need, however it does demonstrate that i can differentiate lessons to the needs of my students.
2.6: This lesson plan uses ICT to effectively adapt a lesson to suit students with distinct special needs. There are many more effective uses for ICT, which other assessments will cover.

Upon reflection, i know really value the work completed during the Inclusive education unit. I applied many of the basics of UDL in my professional experience. The below lesson is just one example of UDL that i incorporated into my practice. It was extremely successful and i built a fantastic relationship with one student in particular during the short time that i was at the school.

Looking at the lesson by itself in that why, it might not particularly look like a differentiated lesson. This is the point. The lesson fits every student in that classroom at the design stage of teaching. This is the purpose of UDL.
