As part of the Professional Practice 3 Unit, i organised a placement at Your Town. Your town is a fantastic group of people who focus on helping young people learn invaluable life and employment skills to help get them back on to their feet and become functioning members of society. This was an awesome, yet enlightening experience. Prior to this placement, i was not truly aware of some of the issues that Youth in Western Sydney were facing. It was fantastic to volunteer my time, and incorporate my music focus into this placement. |
Throughout this placement i met standards:
1.1: Some of these young people had simply fallen out of school, which is interesting as it provides a frame of reference outside of the school context. This is a large aspect of knowing students, and how they learn. Knowing the difficulties that some students face, whether they are physical, social or intellectual differences will help us as teachers cater to their learning needs.
2.5: Part of this process, was helping these young people develop their resume's. With that, of course is helping develop their literacy & numeracy skills to become a stronger employee and person. Regular workshops targeted these skills in relation to other topics mostly to do with welfare and well-being.

I really enjoyed the unit, and it taught me so much about the area that i live in and the students in it. Most of these young people are the types that have been bullied, have a broken home or even are just struggling with confidence issues. It was an honour to help these people get back on their feet. It made everything real. You hear stories about marginalised people on the news all of the time, and it really opens your mind up to the reality of what these people are going through. It drives a real sense of empathy that empowers people to want to make a difference.
